2015-2016 Curriculum

Each year, I strive to keep you all posted with what we are up to for school.  This list works for us...I make no promises that it will work for your family's needs.

Dancing Queen
2nd Grade (what?!)
DQ is an avid reader, and LOVES learning languages, so don't freak out when you see she is working on three different languages this year.  It was her idea, not mine!  I would recommend starting with one.  School typically takes 3-4 hours per day.

  • Math - CLE Math 2 (4 days a week).  Friday is Math Fun Day.  We use Life of Fred, Math Extensions Unit Book 1, and Math Problem Solvers (latter two from Prufrock Press).  We don't do all three, but we generally do one chapter from LOF and one worksheet from either book.
  • Literature - various reading books based on a list I compiled.  I will share this list soon!  Basically, she reads the book (most 2nd graders may need some of the books read to them - or use audio books) and twice a week, she narrates and we discuss together.  I'll go more in depth in a post about how we do literature.
  • History - Finishing Story of the World Vol. I and moving on to SOTW Vol. II.  Using resources from my lists.
  • Science - Earth Science and Astronomy for the Grammar Stage from Elemental Science.  We LOVE Elemental Science!!
  • Writing - The Complete Writer Level 2 (4 days a week).  Selected writing assignments from CLE Language Arts 2.
  • Grammar - CLE Language Arts 2 (skip spelling).
  • Spelling - Phonetic Zoo Level A
  • Art - Home Art Studio Grade 2
  • Bible - Bible Road Trip Year 1
  • Foreign Language - finish Getting Started with Spanish then work slowly through Spanish for Children A; Latina Christiana I; finish The Greek Alphabet and work slowly through Elementary Greek Year One.  Total, we spend about 15 minutes on language per day.
  • Other Random Subjects - Lollipop Logic Book 3 and Primarily Logic (1-2 pages per week), Vocabulary Cartoons Elementary Edition (one cartoon per week), English from the Roots Up Flashcards (one card per week, choosing one from a Latin or Greek root we have already learned).  Combined, these subjects take less than 15-20 minutes, and are highlights for Dancing Queen.
The Hulk
PreK 3
The Hulk is an extremely active little boy, but he does like to do his school because he likes to do what his big sister is doing:)  School at this age is little more than snuggling and reading together, but he sometimes insists on doing a workbook page.

  • As our main spine, we are using Memoria Press' Preschool Curriculum.  It has a great list of books along with fun learning activities to complete each week for different areas of learning.  I'll review it for you soon:)  Best of all, it takes about 15 minutes to get through, much of it which can be done either snuggling on the couch (or floor...or bed...or outside) or in a hands-on way.  I added it some kids songs for when we finish, and that pretty much wraps up what we do.
  • I also LOVE, LOVE, LOVE reading The New Bible in Pictures for Little Eyes and Big Thoughts for Little People with him.  These are awesome Bible resources and take only minutes to read each day.
  • If The Hulk wants more to do, I have 2 workbooks on hand for him to choose from - Horizons Preschool for 3's and the About Three series from Rod and Staff.  When he wants, he grabs a worksheet and I'll sit with him to finish.  Sometimes he will grab 3 or 4 to do and sometimes he gets bored half way into one worksheet.  I let him make the terms right now for this kind of learning.  I also keep a stack of coloring books, do-a-dots markers, and blank paper for him on hand during school hours.
